The relief of your hand reflects some important topographic elements of the 7th Continent. The Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) extend across the entire continent and rise up from sea level steeply though the East Antarctic Ice Sheet covers most of it (curled up fingers). The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), is much lower in elevation, with the underlying continent being below sea level. WAIS is the ice sheet that is losing ice faster than its accumulating it and scientists are studying the rates to see how quickly it is melting.
